Tips and Tricks from a Child Development Specialist
Hi there if you don’t know me my name is Ashley I’m a child development specialist I’ve been working in early intervention for quite some time I just got out of a session with one of my little ones and I wanted to share what I worked on with her so a shape sorter is one of the items that
I start to use it early on in sessions we focus on taking out and when we take out we say out over and over again because the more your child hears that language the more they’re gonna pick it up they’re like little sponges um you can also place items underneath your mouth so their gaze steers up
at your mouth and they can learn how to speak as well so once we take all the items out of the bucket with my littlest ones we focus on fine motor skills so i will teach the little ones to put it on i will use their hand to help them put it on as well if they’re
very active and like they like to help out so i would set these all aside and i would give them a choice of two would you like the star or the square and hold up two items once they point or grab at one oh you would like the square okay let’s put it in in in and hold
their hands and guide them and it went in you can open it up and let them see that it went in to visually see what’s going on um you know children love to see what’s going on inside i almost wish that these were clear so anyways that’s one thing i would do if the child’s a little bit
more advanced and wants to do it by themselves i would cover up all of the holes like so and leave the square open for them to place in once they’ve mastered placing an object inside with you covering the holes then i would give them an option of two holes hmm where does the square go does it go
here or here so they have to think about it but it’s you know less challenging they might see this and feel a little scared so this is less challenging as you move on you can let them do it themselves and oh i see you put the square in um also this is great for teaching shapes teaching 3d
shapes as well it’s also great for teaching colors [Applause] it’s also great for giving a choice of two items okay so for the older ones i would focus on shapes and colors for the younger ones i would definitely cover up the holes and allow them to try to put one in if they’re having a hard time i
would take their hand and help them put in oh yay you put in that’s so wonderful so here are a little here’s some little tips and tricks that you can use at home guys if you know somebody needs this please share it with them and please remember all activities require adult supervision thanks
