Captain Victoria Garcia Named Military Times Guardian of the Year for Leading Space Defense Mission

Well it is military appreciation month and we are lifting up this year’s recipients of the military times service members of the Year awards every year I get the distinct honor of presenting these Awards to one outstanding military member from each branch of service who has gone above and beyond the Call of Duty well today we introduce you

to guardian of the Year Captain Victoria Garcia of U.S space command I chose to enlist because it was the American dream I know that sounds cliche but it was I immigrated here from Mexico with my mom and my two sisters for me it was an opportunity to go see the world space force defense against the threat to

the space domain the space domain is very contested and we protect and defend against the ability to maneuver that domain I’m motivated by the things that we support and the domain that we protect a duty to protection Captain Garcia proved she could execute when she led the U.S space command’s first ever space electromagnetic Warfare expeditionary flight Captain Victoria Garcia

a mission tasked by the president for a high threat crisis in U.S European command Captain Garcia joining us now live from Delta 3 there on Peterson space Force Base Colorado Captain Garcia what a pleasure to have you and congratulations thank you Kara thank you for having me well space Power not everyone understands U.S space command and the Captain Victoria Garcia

mission it’s not about UFOs and aliens as some may think it’s about real life threats without giving away of course military space Secrets explain the types of attacks you aim to throw it every day yes well the space force has got an incredible Mission you know we are all about the space domain protecting and defending that domain Captain Victoria Garcia

alongside our joint Partners so we’re very familiar with the other domains the air land sea and so we are dedicated specifically to the protection of the space domain while also integrating with those joint partners and not everybody knows what that means Victoria right they know the stories like uh Chinese balloons coming into the atmosphere they hear things Captain Victoria Garcia

about Radars or or tracking systems but nobody really understands why we have to protect you know way up high so on a regular basis what is it you’re looking for that we may not understand or realize it you know is such a necessary mission yes so the space domain is very contested it’s very congested you know it’s

a lots of different um activity out there and um certainly you know within the last 20 years that the traffic up there within the orbit to uh you know it’s just grown tremendously and so when you think about this day and age and how we um our society and our world just uh looks to the spatial means

for so many things things like your your common GPS right your global positioning system how to track medical equipment or medicine to to the American public those things that all is relying on space and so protecting those assets um tracking that information for you is very very important so that we are not you know pushed back to

the stone ages um so again the protective defense of that is so important to the space force and you led the first ever space electromagnetic Warfare expeditionary Mission okay explain what a Sioux Mission means for our country yes ma’am so space electromagnetic Warfare so if you think of this electromagnetic spectrum and how we can communicate through that

Spectrum uh satellite Communications um I did I was able to lead a group of 54 Airmen and guardian to a location undisclosed in Europe in support of a European crisis last year and were able to set up our operational floor in a very austere location where we were able to bring our weapon system there and essentially um

access that part of the spectrum within specific satellite Footprints and maneuver if needed and if called upon um exploit the the electromagnetic spectrum so it was a very uh honorable historic event just being able to lead those young Airmen and Guardians and they were phenomenal well as you said you are living the American dream wearing that uniform

giving back to your community training on all kinds of platforms and then I think of of where your family you know comes from and and and you as well you know we as journalists we cover the violence and the drugs and the gangs there in Juarez Mexico all the time so what does serving this country within space

force mean to you and your family yeah so well it’s historic you know I came to this country with my mother and my two sisters um just so long ago 1987 and to enlist in the military I was uh pardon listed before this and to serve I I wanted to give back to a country to serve honorably

um to a country that you know adopted my my family and so it’s been a dream uh the military the space force the air force that have just made my dream my dreams come true and I’ve been able to to start and leave a legacy for my future children so it is remarkable and um definitely just a

a dream come true well as you become service member of the year what do you think makes your job so unique and so special and how has it changed your life yes ma’am so my job is I’m incredibly blessed I get to work with phenomenal teams like I said it’s a young Airmen and Guardians that I was

able to deploy with the amount of responsibility that’s placed on their shoulders to protect this incredible domain this very large domain the maturity the just get after it the motivation that they have it’s what makes my job so special so I Look to them and I thank them for for this specific award because um they are the

ones who made this happen so I hear you want to give someone a special shout out captain yes so my husband uh kindergarten class and also miss Craig fiske’s kindergarten class in Colorado Springs I just want to say hello um and and also looking forward to seeing you all I hope they are streaming captain if we will

we will make sure that school is well supported uh and they’ll be able to to see the segment and if not live they will as soon as they get home from school and clearly your husband has been a tremendous support for you and what a great great story and you are you’re living the American dream you’re such

a great representative not only for our military but for your entire family Captain Garcia.
